Freedom of Speech Now it think this expression’s definition goes without saying but some ignorant people can’t seem to figure it out. Freedom of speech is the right to express any opinions that you have, in speaking, print or otherwise. There is some contest of late, as to whether or not this freedom extends to the internet. I think it is very clear that it does. Freedom of speech gives people the right to express opinions, thoughts and ideas, however they want. The internet is a public database, created for conveying thoughts, ideas and information from one person to another, or to the masses. The internet is a collection of mostly opinions written by people across the world. Therefore if, what people could say or do on the internet, there would be a significantly lower number of sites, and users. Taking away peoples ability to say what they want takes away a large portion of the internet community as a whole. I do not believe that students should be punished for anything that goes on outside the classroom and of school grounds. The school has jurisdiction over itself. That is where it ends. What people choose to do with there own lives outside of school is completely up to them. It is NOT the schools concern. The school should instead stop wasting they’re time on worrying what students are doing with their own personal lives and maybe try to fix some of the problems inside the school. Even the school runs perfectly with no problems or illegal activity going on it still should not concern itself with private, outside school choices. Unfortunately for students, schools do have the right to limit what students can say or do. This is not at all right. Last time I checked, the constitution gave us the freedom to express our opinions without penalty, and did NOT create a public school system. I believe it is freedom of speech, that right, that makes the United States of America one of the greatest countries in the world right now, and it is truly a shame that the schools feel as though they are so high and mighty that they can limit what people have to say. Now there is a limit of course, as with everything. Slander is obviously illegal, but that’s as far as the limitations should go. No one, especially an outside source should supersede the right of people to express their opinions, and limit what anyone can say.
